May 2016 Update:
Since construction started in January, the small dedicated team at De-Tong Ling Retreat Centre with the help from various volunteers has been able to complete 10 foundation slabs out of 11 for the Group Retreat Facility. With approximately 208 cubic metres of concrete poured over the past five months, the crew faced extreme heat, heavy rain, and a shortage of people power. Despite everything, they persevered.
For much of May, the team battled against ferocious weather of heavy rain and wind. At times they felt damp, in the mud, and mildly apprehensive but nevertheless they were always steadfast in their resolve. The construction site was a big mud pit for a large period of time but work continued on. On Tuesday, the team finished pouring the last foundation slab for the season, which was the Gompa and teacher’s rooms (also known as the monster slab, roughly 66 cubic metres of concrete in total).
Construction will be on hold over the winter months as adverse weather conditions will prevent any meaningful work to be done on the site during this time; the crew is looking forward to a well-deserved rest in the next few months.
The building of the Group Retreat Facility is proving to be a true practice of endurance but seeing what has been accomplished by a small handful of dedicated people so far is quite incredible and inspiring! Much gratitude to all the wonderful volunteers and talented cooks who have contributed so much to the project in providing good company and sublime, five-star meals that have made this demanding job mentally and physically rewarding.
Much alike the time the Dharma first arrived in Tibet when neither a stupa nor a monastery existed and the amount of sweat and pain that went into constructing them, this is the story in the Western context. Once the Group Retreat Facility is completed, it too will benefit numberless sentient beings and with that motivation, we look towards September. If you would like to be part of this positive endeavor, please feel free to contact us.
Construction has begun! (January 2016)
After many years of planning, De-Tong Ling has finally commenced the building of the Group Retreat Facility. Set in a pristine wilderness environment at the western end of Kangaroo Island, this facility will be a wonderful addition to the individual retreat houses already built there. Retreat spaces of this quality are extremely rare in the world.
When completed the facility will accommodate up to 40 people, allowing the centre to host many retreats of varying lengths over the coming years.

Skilled and unskilled volunteers needed.
We are looking for volunteers to come to De-Tong Ling and help for as long as they would like with the building of the Group Retreat Facility. The work involved includes: multiple building trades, general labourers, cooks/bakers, cleaners, chai/tea makers, vegetable and landscape gardeners and many more.
